Teachers Training

According to UNESCO, Uganda, like many other African countries, is facing an education crisis: around 83% of children aged 10 are unable to read and understand an age-appropriate text. The term for this is ‘learning poverty’ and is partly caused by children not able to attend school, but mainly due to poor education in schools.
Together with the headmistress of Kidera Primary School, Rtn. Nyafwono Lydia Omwoto and Rtn. Constance Nyamikola (TYIPD), Doris Steinmüller-Nethl (RC Innsbruck Alpin) and Judith Köck (RC Kitzbühel) have launched a training programme for the teachers at Kidera Primary School with financial support from their Rotary clubs.

The first meeting with all the teachers took place in December 2024 and the training programme was discussed with Constance. The initial focus was to be on Module 3: teaching and learning strategies. In this module, teachers are shown new methods of interacting with different teaching styles and taught the skills of 21st century methodology. In particular, a focus will be placed on new working methods in large classes (sometimes up to 250 children per teacher).
Four additional teachers from the Early Childhood Development groups, in particular from Mary Ochieng Early Childhood Education Center in Kidera, also take part.
The training is carried out in 8 training sessions by Constance Nyamikola, each at the weekend. In addition, Judith and Doris are covering the cost of food and drinks so that the teachers can follow the lessons with plenty of energy and motivation.
A big Thank You goes to Rtn. Constance Nyamikola, who was awarded and honoured on 16th of April 2025 with a Paul Harris Fellow Pin by Doris (RC Innsbruck Alpin) and Judith (RC Kitzbühel) for the great work and training of the women’s group and now the teachers.

In February 2025, the headmistress Lydia was unfortunately transferred by the Tororo District School Authority to another governmental school - despite our protest. The successor, Headmaster Godfrey Kagwa Opano, has confirmed his commitment and support for the continuation of this training programme and is now actively pursuing cooperation in various projects with the international partners, in particular with Doris and Judith.
